How to choose a display case for your figures
Updated:
A good display case protects your collection from dust and sunlight and makes it look much better. These are the points that matter most before you buy one.
1. Measure the figure, not the scale
Scale gives a rough idea of size: a 1/12 figure is usually about 15–18 cm, a 1/7 about 23–25 cm and a 1/6 around 30 cm. But bases, wings and effect parts change the height a lot. Measure your tallest figure with its base and effects.
Tip: check the case's interior dimensions and leave at least 2–3 cm of free space on top and on the sides.
2. Acrylic or glass
- Acrylic: light, hard to break and ideal for single figures. It scratches more easily — clean it with a microfiber cloth, never paper towels.
- Glass: clearer and scratch-resistant, but heavier. Better for large multi-shelf cabinets.
3. Sun protection
Direct sunlight fades and yellows PVC over time. Keep the case away from windows or look for UV-filtering acrylic.
4. LED lighting
- USB: the most convenient option; it runs off a phone charger.
- Cool or warm white: cool light makes bright and metallic colors pop; warm light gives a museum look.
- Choose low-power LEDs and avoid light shining directly on a figure for hours.
5. Dust and closure
Cases with a door or lid that closes well cut cleaning a lot. Stackable boxes are handy if your collection will grow.
6. Safety
If you live in an earthquake zone, anchor tall cabinets to the wall and use museum putty under figure bases so they don't fall.
Quick recap
- Measure the figure with base and effects.
- Acrylic for single pieces; glass for big collections.
- Away from the sun, with USB LEDs and a good seal.
